English Apples Are Best

4.16.05pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 21st Oct 2003

Today (Tuesday 21 October) is Annual Apple Day. West Midlands Euro-MP Liz Lynne is keen to encourage the public to take a bite out of an English apple today for their own well being and the good of the countryside.

She said:

"As an MEP, apart from working in the constituency, I also work in Brussels and Strasbourg and therefore have the occasion to eat a non-English apple from time to time, even though I try to buy only English apples at home. I can honestly say that nothing beats an English apple. Yet orchards have declined in recent years as the British marketplace has been bombarded with apples from other European countries and from across the world.

"As well as tasting great, English apples are a great source of fibre and vitamins. Fruit orchards are a wonderful feature of the English landscape that we need to protect and nurture. So eating an apple a day will not only keep the doctor away, but will be good for the economy and the countryside as well!"
