Statement on Jaguar

3.02.34pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 17th Sep 2004

Speaking following todays announcement by Jaguar on their Coventry Plant, West Midlands Euro-MP Liz Lynne said:

"Although the news is better than we first feared in that most of the jobs are to stay in the West Midlands, it still remains a devastating blow for Coventry.

"Ford allowed speculation that all jobs would transfer to America to continue when they could have announced over the last few days that this would not happen.

"I suspect that Ford allowed this state of affairs to continue in order to make today's announcement look good. The workers at Coventry deserve better than that and the company should apologise to them for the way they have been treated."
