MEP visits Stourbridge school12.00.00am GMT Fri 3rd Feb 2006
Liz Lynne, Lib Dem MEP for the West Midlands and member of the European Parliament's Human Rights Subcommittee, today visited a Stourbridge primary school and spoke to children about her work campaigning for human rights. Liz Lynne met pupils at St James CE Primary School in Wollaston as part of a non-uniform day held to raise money for children's rights organisation UNICEF. She shared a school lunch with teachers and children, then participated in a school council meeting, answering questions on her role as an MEP and in particular the work she does on human rights. Speaking afterwards, Liz Lynne said: "I was delighted to speak to the children about the human rights issues I work on. The school council is a great way for children to get involved in issues that interest them. "My interest in politics began at an early age, so it is great to see the same happening today. I wish them every success with their fundraising for UNICEF." "Ensuring basic human rights for all is essential. Respecting and protecting those rights is something people of all ages can contribute to." ENDS Notes to Editors 1. Liz Lynne is an active campaigner on human rights issues. Most recently, she called on the UK government to sign up to the Council of Europe Convention on Human Trafficking. Of the 46 Member States of the Council of Europe, 21 have yet to sign up to the convention, including the UK and France.
