Stratford MEP backs the Fairtrade Town Campaign10.13.53am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 4th Aug 2006
Local MEP, Liz Lynne today visited the Oxfam Shop in Stratford-upon-Avon to offer her support for the campaign to get the town Fairtrade status. The Fairtrade movement has gained widespread support from local shops, supermarkets and cafes over recent months and recently reached the important milestone of exceeding the minimum number of local retailers supplying Fairtrade produce. Liz Lynne MEP, a long time campaigner for Fairtrade and whose constituency office is based in the town said: "I am delighted to support such an important project as turning Stratford-Upon-Avon into a Fairtrade town. "We need to do all that we can to ensure that those in the developing world receive a fair deal for what they produce. Shoppers buying goods with the Fairtrade label in Stratford is an important and practical way of contributing to this process. "This campaign is about widening the availability and consumption of Fairtrade produce in the town and ensuring that everyday shopping habits change. By supporting Fairtrade, Stratford can set an excellent example for its residents and international visitors alike. Trade should be about fairness not favours!" After the visit Liz and her assistants enjoyed a cup of tea and slice of cake …Fairtrade of course! ENDS Notes to Editors 1.Stratford District Council will shortly be considering a proposal by local Lib Dem Councillor Peter Moorse to support the move to gain fair trade status for the town. A decision is expected by October.
