Common Social Objectives: Yes, Common Social Model: No

2.47.39pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 5th Sep 2006

Speaking in the debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg today on the European Social Model, Liz Lynne, Employment and Social Affairs spokesperson for the Lib Dems said:

"I am pleased that we mention subsidiarity in the report and that we call on member states to act and not the EU.

"I still however, have severe reservations in talking about the European Social Model at all.

"I know we have common goals but we do not have common systems across Member States to achieve them and neither should we have. Hence my concerns.

"I am against working towards a one-size-fits-all European Social Model instead of respecting the diversity we have at the moment.

"Common social objectives, Yes, a common social model, No."

Editor's Notes

The debate is on an own initiative report and therefore not legislative and will be voted on by parliament tomorrow.
